Design Summits
I have twice worked for Engineers Without Borders, helping to deliver their Design Summit Program. This program is an opportunity for undergraduate university students to learn about the challenges and opportunities of working as an engineer in community development.
Working to empower communities and build capacity is a challenging and exciting task, and one that Engineers Without Borders takes very seriously. Their rigorous work and deep commitment to reflection has ensured that the outcomes they deliver are always appropriate and authentic. |
For two weeks in 2015 in Cambodia, and another two in 2017 in India, I facilitated the students through the Humanitarian Design Process. I delivered workshops, managed community engagement, and kept logistics running.
For the students, this is an incredible opportunity to broaden their perception of what it is possible to achieve as an engineer. For many it is their first time abroad, and to engage so deeply with a community in this way is for many of them career changing. Having the chance to facilitate that process was rewarding and fun! |
